How real is the data-center microgrid & EMS adjacency?
Question: What behind-the-meter microgrid and EMS opportunity does the data-center wave create, and can Meridian win it?
The same APAC data-center demand that drives power and cooling is now pulling behind-the-meter microgrids for firm power. The serviceable attach is ~$60–100M by 2029, but the adjacency is already contested by FluxGen and hinges on a controls-software anchor Meridian lacks today.
The pull
Grid-interconnection delays and firm-power requirements are pushing APAC operators to specify on-site generation, storage and load orchestration. Microgrids are moving from a sustainability nice-to-have to a speed-to-power necessity — the same constraint slowing straight grid connections.
- ·Firm power secures energization dates
- ·Ties directly to the confirmed data-center pipeline
- ·Overlaps power electronics, storage and building controls
Sizing
Applying a microgrid-and-EMS attach to the confirmed and probable APAC data-center pipeline yields a ~$60–100M serviceable range by 2029. The controllers segment carries most of the hardware value; EMS software is the recurring, higher-margin layer.
| Layer | Serviceable ($M) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Microgrid controllers | 45 | Hardware-led, one-time |
| EMS software | 35 | Recurring, higher margin |
Can Meridian win it?
Power electronics and building controls transfer directly, and Sundara and Atlas Grid are warm demand. The gap is controls software — FluxGen already has it and has won a campus. A CellWise acquisition would supply the missing anchor; without it, entry is slower and margin-dilutive.
- ·FluxGen is the reference competitor
- ·CellWise is the controls-software build-vs-buy question
- ·Returns are sensitive to tariff and demand-charge structures
Evidence
Microgrid controllers & EMS market ~$3.6B, ~19% CAGR.
